About

Anthony Cerulli received his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago (M.A., Yale; B.A. Loyola-Chicago), where he wrote a dissertation examining the associations of religion and medicine in narratives of illness and patienthood in classical and medieval Sanskrit literature.

Among his current research projects, Anthony is working on a monograph tentatively titled, “Curriculum Saṃskṛtam: The Formation of Medical Tradition in the Gurukula and College,” which draws on ethnographic data he has collected between 2003-2011 in Kerala, south India among traditionally trained Namboodiri physicians and at a number of ayurvedic colleges in South India. This study looks at the history of the South Indian gurukula as an institution for medical education and its changing and current roles alongside the colonial and postcolonial history of the development of a standardized curriculum for ayurvedic colleges.

Anthony teaches courses covering a variety of topics in South Asian Studies in the departments of Religious Studies and Asian Studies at Hobart & William Smith Colleges. At present, however, he is a visiting professor at l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales, and during the 2012-13 academic year he will be a research fellow at l'Institut d'études avancées-Paris (http://www.paris-iea.fr/resident/anthony-cerulli). Additionally, he continues to work as Managing Editor of the journal, India Review.
